About Us

The GeoInformatic Unit (GIU) was established in 2001, leveraging on the development in the science of geographical information, the GIU undertakes impactful research, teaching and learning, and consultancy to enhance knowledge and understanding of the humanity-environment interface in the context of the sustainability agenda. The main objective of GIU is to undertake fundamental, field, and applied research, and consultancy related to Geospatial technologies that benefit humankind. This unit also wants to produce and disseminate knowledge through high-quality teaching, research, policy studies, and publications related to Geospatial technologies and Humanity. Then this unit hopes to contribute to society’s development through community engagement and consultation in the area of geospatial technologies.

GIU is located in the Geography Section, School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, which is comprised of academics from various fields of expertise and various research backgrounds. The unit is hosted by a number of core academics who specialize in the collection, interpretation, and analysis of spatial data with human well-being as a primary focus. The unit's international collaborators include India, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, the US, the UK, and many more that involve the sharing of knowledge and expertise. The unit also offers various activities such as seminars, conferences, consultations, and industry training that are open to all. Currently, the Geoinformatic Unit focuses more on research in Urban and Regional Planning, Hydrology, Environmental Studies, Economic and Industrial Development, Biodiversity and Conservation, Industrial Technology, Coastal and Marine Studies
